Uche Sparks Straightforward Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that all but guarantees them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for several Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second game in match.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were outmatched against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
